چکیده

The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the performance of different polarimetric rainfall estimation algorithms at C-band frequencies. The polarimetric rainfall algorithms are obtained using a wide range of measured drop size distributions with an optical disdrometer in the UK. A dense network of raingauges was used to validate the polarimetric rainfall estimates and the overall results were compared with the conventional Marshall and Palmer relationship. The uncertainty in the rainfall estimation due to noise in the polarimetric radar measurements is also addressed in this paper.

Rainfall rate retrieval in presence of path attenuation using C-band polarimetric weather radars

Weather radar systems are very suitable tools for the monitoring of extreme rainfall events providing measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution over a wide geographical area. Nevertheless, radar rainfall retrieval at C-band is prone to several error sources, such as rain path attenuation which affects the accuracy of inversion algorithms. In this paper, the so-called rain profiling...

Simulation of polarimetric radar variables in rain at S-, C- and X-band wavelengths

Polarimetric radar variables of rainfall events, like differential reflectivity ZDR, or specific differential phase KDP, are better suited for estimating rain rate R than just the reflectivity factor for horizontally polarized waves, ZH. A variety of physical and empirical approaches exist to estimate the rain rate from polarimetric radar observables. The relationships vary over a wide range wi...

Rainfall retrieval from polarimetric X-band radar measurements

Dual polarization radars have shown considerable improvement of quantitative estimation of rainfall rate and raindrop size distribution (DSD) parameters. Most studies have been done with S and C-band radars and only a few studies with higher X-band weather radars. X-band radars have the advantages of lower cost and higher differential phase shift but with higher attenuation too. Furthermore, th...

Dual-polarization C-band weather radar algorithms for rain rate estimation and hydrometeor classification in an alpine region

Dual polarization is becoming the standard for new weather radar systems. In contrast to conventional weather radars, where the reflectivity is measured in one polarization plane only, a dual polarization radar provides transmission in either horizontal, vertical, or both polarizations while receiving both the horizontal and vertical channels simultaneously. Since hydrometeors are often far fro...

Polarimetric Radar Rainfall Estimation at X-band: Evaluation of Attenuation Correction

The most commonly used polarimetric radar measurements in rainfall estimation are the reflectivity factor, usually at horizontal polarization (Zh), differential reflectivity (Zdr) and specific differential propagation phase (Kdp). Based on the above three measurements, a number of algorithms have been derived in the literature to estimate rainfall (see Bringi and Chandrasekar, 2001 for a summar...
